E-commerce figures in 2021 in France

Every year, at the beginning of the year, the Fevad (Federation of e-commerce and distance selling) presents its report on e-commerce in France. The organisation thus gave the figures for online sales in France in 2021 in a press release on 3 February 2022. A look at the key figures for e-commerce in 2021!

In France, online sales grew by nearly 15% in 2021 (compared to 8.5% in 2020), so much so that the e-commerce sector exceeded 129 billion euros. Many sectors grew between 2020 and 2021, such as the product sales sector, which saw a 7% growth (or about €66.7 billion). However, the real upturn is in the Transport, Tourism and Leisure sectors, which are back on track with an increase of 44% compared to 2020. This figure is still slightly below the 2019 figures (by -16%) but it is an encouraging recovery for these sectors which were hit hard by the health crisis.

Sales sites listed more than 2.1 billion transactions for both products and services. This corresponds to an increase of 16%. However, although the average transaction amount decreased compared to 2020 (-0.8%), it remains above the 2019 level with an increase of 1.8%. The average basket reached €60 in 2021 compared to €61 in 2020.

2020 was a difficult year for the Transport, Travel and Ticketing sectors, notably due to the COVID-19 health crisis. However, the iCM (mobile commerce index), which tracks the evolution of sales on mobiles, has noted an increase in purchases of products and travel in 2021 with a 23% increase. This increase would be due in particular to the recovery in sales in the travel and tourism sectors last year. On the other hand, while mobile sales increased significantly in October (+37%) with a decrease in November (+21%), they decreased by up to 3% in December due to the recovery of the epidemic.

With the explosion of e-commerce in 2020, the iCE 100 panel, i.e. the 100 leading e-commerce sites and one of Fevad's barometers for monitoring the development of online sales, reports a growth of 16.3% in 2021. According to Fevad, the leading sites are resuming their pre-crisis growth rate.

Fevad has noted a strong increase in the number of websites created by physical retail chains, attesting to a strong digitalization since the beginning of the health crisis. The number of e-commerce sites is said to have increased by 11% with over 200,100 active sites, a rate of growth equivalent to that of the previous year.

The e-commerce sector is therefore continuing to grow. It is therefore important for retailers to adapt and understand the expectations of online shoppers. On the one hand, it is necessary to succeed in reaching them by setting oneself apart from competitors thanks to an optimal digital strategy, on the other hand, it is necessary to prioritise the security of transactions, make transparent offers, ensure data protection, etc.
